Mummering is a centuries-old Christmas tradition in Newfoundland. During the twelve days of Christmas, friends and neighbours disguise themselves, often using lace curtains, pillowcases, or old clothes, and visit homes in their communities. The disguised mummers dance, play music, and speak in funny voices while the hosts try to guess who they are. As with many of the outport communities where it was most popular, it is dying out, but has been somewhat revived in recent decades. Mummering remains a joyful symbol of Newfoundland’s community spirit, creativity, and sense of fun. The photos below are from events in St John’s.
